The Name of the Father

The Bible tells us to call on the name of the LORD (Joel 2:32, Acts 2:21).  God swears by His own name (Jer 22:5).  In Exodus 6:3, God shows us that he was known to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by the title God Almighty, but then later revealed Himself to Moses as the LORD God.  God said to Moses in Exodus 3:15, “Say this to the people, ‘The LORD… this is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.’”

God (Hebrew Elohim) and Lord (Hebrew ‘Adown, Adonay, or Baal) are simply titles, but Lord or God in all caps, as seen in most versions of the bible, stand in for God’s actual name.  So what then is His name?  Some say Jehovah, some say Yahweh. We would like to take a deeper look at the name that He has chosen and given to us by which He would be known.  The name that He gave to Moses is recorded in Exodus 3:15 in the original Hebrew as הוהי (sorry, for whatever reason the computer switched this around, it should be written the other way), when transliterated into English and written left to right is YHWH (Strong’s H3068).  Notice it has no vowels which is how we end up with different pronunciations.  It would seem unable to be pronounced without adding vowel sounds.  However in the Paleo-Hebrew in which it was recorded the letters made both vowel and consonant sounds.  Y = ee, H = ah, and W = oo.  Therefore the pronunciation of the consonant and vowel sounds in the name YHWH would be: eeYaHooWaH, or YAHUWAH.

This name, that the God of heaven and earth gave by which He should be remembered by throughout all generations, is replaced with the more common LORD or GOD in most modern translations.  for all threeC publications we have chosen to honor that name and publish it as it occurs, leaving it in its simplest English transliteration: YHWH (to be pronounced YaHuWaH).  This is an holy name, and should be reverenced accordingly (third commandment).

Further support for using the names: Hsa 2:16-17Jer 12:16-17Deut 32:2-3, and many others.
